The Whale coast route, Zuid- Afrika

De garden route is de meest bekende en bezochte route van Zuid- Afrika, maar als je een stukje verder rijdt kom je bij de Whale Coast route. Deze route is veel minder bekend en wordt vaak zelfs overgeslagen terwijl deze Whale Coast route misschien nog wel mooier is dan de bekende Garden route. Waarom je deze route echt niet mag overslaan tijdens jouw Zuid- Afrika vakantie vertel ik je hieronder!

Wijn regio

Als je van wijn houdt, ben je ook bij deze Whale Coast route aan het juiste adres. Je rijdt van Stellenbosch naar het stadje Hermanus, dan zie je de wijnvelden meteen al liggen. In dit stadje kun je verschillende soorten wijn proeven. Hermanus is het meest zuidelijkste punt van Afrika en hier komen de Indische en Atlantische oceaan samen. Wanneer je het wijn proeven zat bent kun je hier de Big 5 van de zee gaan spotten. Dan heb ik het natuurlijk over walvissen, pinguïns, dolfijnen, zeehonden en haaien. Je vindt ze allemaal in deze regio!

De Big 5 van de zee spotten

De naam van de Whale Coast route zegt het eigenlijk al. Het meest indrukwekkendste van deze route vind ik het spotten van walvissen! Na een mooie tocht door het Quoin Point Nature reserve, waar de Whale Coast route begint komen wij aan bij het plaatsje Hermanus. Vanuit hier kun je verschillende boottochten boeken om walvissen te gaan spotten. Als je een echte waaghals bent en je wilt dichtbij komen kun je ook een kajak huren. 

Let er wel even op in welk seizoen je komt. Van juni tot en met november heb je de meeste kans om de walvissen makkelijk te spotten en kun je dit zelfs met een grote zoomlens van je camera al vanaf de kust doen! Het is zeer de moeite waard om deze fantastische dieren een keer in je leven te kunnen zien! Met zo’n vijftien minuten rijden kom je in Gansbaai, waar je witte haaien kunt bewonderen en als je wilt er ook mee kunt duiken!

Tijdens deze route kun je ook veel pinguïns spotten als je van dieren houdt. In het Stony Point Nature Reserve bij Bettysbaai zitten een hele hoop pinguïns en je kijkt er je ogen uit. Het zijn er zoveel bij elkaar dat het vaak grappige taferelen oplevert. 

Walvis Whale Route

Hiken & relaxen

Je kunt langs deze route mooie hikes maken, vooral in de natuurreservaten. Na al het hiken is het natuurlijk ook wel lekker om wat mooie stranden mee te pakken en te relaxen. Langs de Whale Coast route kom je vele mooie en ook rustige stranden tegen waar je heerlijk een paar uurtjes kunt genieten van het uitzicht!

Clarence drive

Een van de mooiste wegen van Zuid- Afrika is de Clarence drive. Deze weg is 21 kilometer lang en loopt helemaal langs de kust naar Gordons Bay. Deze route is echt prachtig en het zal je verbazen wat een schitterende uitzichten je vanaf deze route hebt! Je rijdt langs steile afgronden, de zee en False Bay. Op mooie en heldere dagen kun je soms zelfs Kaap de Goede Hoop aan de overkant zien liggen. Wanneer je deze weg rijdt kun je af en toe even stoppen wat wel aan te raden is om wat mooie foto’s te schieten of gewoon echt te genieten van het uitzicht. 

Heb jij de big 5 van de zee al eens gespot?! Nee? Dan is deze Whale Coast route in Zuid- Afrika zeker een aanrader. Maar ook wanneer je deze dieren al een keer gezien hebt is deze route echt de moeite waard. Kijk ook eens op Travelworld voor meer informatie over Zuid- Afrika.
