Werken in Australië bij groot tennistoernooi Australian open

Allereerst zal ik mij even voorstellen. Misschien heb je mijn vorige gastblog gelezen over mijn leven in Australië. Ik ben Denise, 29 jaar, kom uit Zoetermeer en woon sinds eind oktober 2019 in Australië. Het land van mijn dromen. Hoewel alles met ups- en downs gaat, zeker in deze tijd, heb ik vorige maand toch weer een droom van mijzelf weten te vervullen. Ik mocht namelijk gaan werken op de Australian open!

Al vanaf dat ik een klein meisje van 6 was zat ik op tennisles. Helaas ben ik daar door meerdere blessures uiteindelijk op mijn 23e mee gestopt, maar de passie is altijd gebleven. Eerder al bezocht ik de Australian Open en de US Open. En nu zag ik een oproep om te werken op de Australian Open. Ik twijfelde geen moment en meldde me aan. Het proces was lang, maar ik sleepte de baan binnen. Food & Beverage attendant en ik mocht dat zijn in één van de spelers cafés. Wat een mazzel.

Foto’s maken was verboden, dus ik moet het in deze moderne tijd doen met mijn geheugen. We mochten uiteraard ook niet laten weten dat we de spelers kenden en moesten uiterst professioneel blijven. Dus van binnen maakte ik af en toe dansjes, terwijl ik van buiten een pokerface opzette en de mensen van hun bestellingen voorzag. Het café waar ik werkte was alleen toegankelijk voor de spelers en coaches. Ik kan je vertellen dat het heel bijzonder voelt om met zo’n speciale pas om je nek te lopen tussen de spelers en dan overal mag gaan en staan waar zij ook zijn.

Lockdown

Helaas kwamen we halverwege het toernooi ineens in een lockdown terecht. Gelukkig duurde het maar 5 dagen en ging de tennis al die tijd (zonder publiek) gewoon door. En aangezien de spelers moesten worden voorzien van eten en drinken heb ik ook gewoon doorgewerkt. Na de lockdown ging ons spelerscafé dicht en mocht ik nog drie dagen in het andere (grote) spelers café werken. Daar was het inmiddels niet al te druk meer. Tenslotte waren er alleen nog maar (halve) finalisten over. Wat natuurlijk ook niet verkeerd is, het is toch elke keer weer een feest om een bekende naam voorbij te zien wandelen of te mogen serveren.

Spelers

Het is ontzettend grappig om je vaste gasten vervolgens op tv te zien. Zowel coaches als spelers. En ik moet zeggen, ze zijn bijna allemaal heel aardig en beleefd. Weinig sterallures. Ze zijn alleen een beetje beledigd als ze uit het toernooi liggen en er “ineens” geen geld meer op hun pas staat. Zolang ze in het toernooi zitten krijgen ze elke dag geld om dingen in de cafés te kopen, maar dat houdt dus ergens op. Verder zijn er een aantal spelers die “stiekem” proberen zoetigheid te kopen zonder dat de coach het doorheeft (want dat mag eigenlijk niet). Sommige hebben een strikt dieet en willen tot de laatste korrel zout weten wat er in hun maaltijd zit. En anderen maakt het niks uit en eten alles, van tosti’s, tot chocolade, ijsjes en pizza.

Als kers op de taart kreeg ik van een vaste gast nog gratis kaartjes voor de halve finale met (mijn favoriet) Djokovic in de winnende hoofdrol. Wat een fantastische tijd heb ik gehad. Ik zou het volgend jaar zo weer doen, hopelijk dan met meer publiek en zonder lockdown! Wil jij meer weten over het avontuur van Denise?
